No Sacrifice by Grace R. Duncan – Release Day Review
Posted by Sara Testarossa
For my first post about other authors’ fiction, it is my pleasure to be posting the review I’ve written for the wonderful Grace R. Duncan’s latest release, No Sacrifice! Grace has a Rafflecopter Giveaway going for the next 11 days, linked later in the post.
First off, let’s take a look at the lovely cover, blurb, and some info about Grace, then I’ll get into my review, which does not contain spoilers for specific plot details.
Patrick has taken his acting talents from high school all the way to a role in a major television show. But as the show progresses, his life of absolute certainties crumbles when he finds himself reacting to the kisses of his male costar. He refuses to accept it, reminding himself he’s married and a father—and thus, straight.
One night he goes to drink his worries away, meets Chance Dillon, and can’t take his eyes off the man. After having a little too much alcohol, he spills his problem to Chance, who helps him realize there’s something other than gay and straight. Patrick’s new understanding of his bisexual identity helps him sleep better—until the next day, when he discovers Chance is a sound technician on the same set.
As their friendship grows and Patrick’s marriage ends, he recognizes a possibility for much more with Chance. But Patrick isn’t ready to be out the way Chance has been for so long, and when the matter is taken out of Patrick’s hands, he pushes Chance away to spare him the mess Patrick’s life has become. By the time he realizes his mistake, it may be too late.

Grace Duncan grew up with a wild imagination. She told stories from an early age – many of which got her into trouble. Eventually, she learned to channel that imagination into less troublesome areas, including fanfiction, which is what has led her to writing male/male erotica.
A gypsy in her own right, Grace has lived all over the United States. She has currently set up camp in East Texas with her husband and children – both the human and furry kind.
As one of those rare creatures who loves research, Grace can get lost for hours on the internet, reading up on any number of strange and different topics. She can also be found writing fanfiction, reading fantasy, crime, suspense, romance and other erotica or even dabbling in art.

Rating: Five out of five stars. No question about it.
No Sacrifice is, hands down, one of the best novels I have ever read, M/M or otherwise, and one of my favorites. Grace Duncan has created a rich, compelling story with many facets that are skillfully woven together to make a fantastic book.
What No Sacrifice is:
A love story – of Patrick and Chance, two flawed men, one trying to find himself, one who already knows himself… their developing friendship, and their developing romance.
A story with a rich cast of characters – The protagonists, Patrick and Chance, are interesting, lovable people, and well developed. Patrick is not the brightest person, at Grace’s admission, but he has a good heart and is dedicated, to his job and loved ones. Chance is a kind, supportive person but he has his own issues as well, especially with how he sees his own worth. The supporting characters are also all multifaceted and important to the story. We have Patrick’s adorable, funny young son Avery, the wise and fabulous drag queen Sophia, and the sweet but no-nonsense waitress Marcy and kind cook Pablo. Patrick’s wife at the beginning of the story, Emily, is a bit confusing at first in her motivations but has an important role to play, and her shy friend Sara is an interesting side character as well. Patrick’s friend and sometimes-asshole co-star Rhys plays a big role in confusing him and helping him, and will be getting his own story. Costars Sebastian and Angelo are fun, good friends to Patrick and Chance, and are deserving of their own story. Even jerk director Jack isn’t one dimensional. Patrick and Chance’s families have big roles to play in No Sacrifice. Patrick’s loving but traditional Mama Kalea and quiet father Shaughn, his wise no-nonsense great-Aunt Tutu, and his many, varied siblings all have important roles in the story. Finally, we have Chance’s strong, loving mother Violet, homophobic brother Gareth, and intense but sweet Vannah. And that’s just the main supporting cast… there are side characters who I didn’t even mention here.
A coming out story – of Patrick, both to himself and others, sometimes to acceptance, sometimes to much less.
A story about family – both blood and chosen family, and deciding which is more important.
A story about choices – both smart and unwise, both good and mistakes.
A story accurately addressing bisexuality – Patrick first has to come to terms with his own bisexuality, then deal with misconceptions and lack of acceptance from people he knows. Though Grace didn’t set out to make a PSA about bisexuality when writing No Sacrifice, the book does address many of the challenges that bisexual people face in society.
A sexy story – No Sacrifice has a healthy helping of some very steamy, sexy scenes. Grace is very good at writing varied sex that is emotional and hot.
An emotionally moving story – This story has made me laugh, and made my heart ache. Fans of humor, angst, and fluff will all find something to enjoy.
A friends to lovers story – Patrick and Chance start out as friends, and we get to read their relationship developing over the months.
And finally, a fantastically written book – Grace R. Duncan has a wonderful way with words. Her prose is so well written, and the dialogue flows so realistically.
No Sacrifice comes with my highest recommendations. I have already read it three times and know I will come back to it again and again, because it is just so fantastic.
About Sara TestarossaSara is a voracious reader who also loves to write. She has been writing stories for all of her adult life, and most of her childhood. She started out writing general fiction, moved on to M/F romance, and wrote M/M romance and erotica almost exclusively for years before writing her first F/F erotic romance. Her focus for many years was fanfiction, but she has gotten back to originals, thanks in no small part to partners’ and friends’ loving encouragement over the years. She also enjoys beta-reading, editing, and recording fiction in audio form. Her hobbies include listening to many types of music, watching sci-fi and action shows and movies, and spending inordinate amounts of time wandering around online. She has a wonderful partner and several furbeasts of the feline and canine variety. Sara’s creative endeavors are often limited by her being a spoonie with a full-time day job to pay the bills – not that writing/editing/recording can’t. That said, she’s extremely passionate about her work as a sex educator and retail worker, which is incredibly fun and rewarding.
